Raising a Spiritually Nourished Child |
|
Five suggested steps from Tobin Hart
Beholding
Take the time to listen to a child without judgment, being present to their unique way of seeing, their questions, their deep feelings. This helps us really appreciate and respect this unique spiritual being and in turn helps the child see and trust his or her own inner light.
Holding
Offer appropriate limits, honest feedback and the safe space that tenderness provides. Little things, a daily bedtime story, a shared silly joke, or even a consistent reasonable limit sends a deep message of care. The little things are like glue that holds our lives together.
Images
Offer your richest images, stories, movies, heroes, ideas, and deepest questions, not as dogma, but as an alternative to the diet of the mass media. Notice which ones draw out the child’s own sense of truth, justice, goodness, and hope.
Wonder
Stay present to the spontaneous opportunities that arise for wonder. Make room daily for those things that invite wonder and wondering: play, imagination, nature, silence, touch, creative expression, questions, beauty, laughter.
Nourishing ourselves
Nourish and demonstrate your own love and wisdom each day through things like slow food, silence, service or song. Children learn through modeling. We teach mostly who we are; what does our life teach today?
